How much does SMS fraud cost you in extra IOT charges, calls to CSRs and lost subscriber goodwill?
SMS fraud is becoming increasingly common. It can cause significant damage to an operator. For example in SS7 spoofing fraud, subscriber identities are high-jacked and used to send SMS messages. Typically the fraudster will sell his ability to send large numbers of SMS messages at low cost to organised criminals. This often results in tens of thousands, in some cases hundreds of thousands, of messages being sent from a single identity.
The damage can be substantial. The operator is liable for IOT termination charges. He may also have customers upset by return phone calls from the recipients of these messages. In the early forms of the fraud, it was possible to identify attacks manually and switch them out. SMSCs could also, if properly equipped, identify fraudulent SMS messages coming from the wrong location register. However, now fraudsters have adapted to outwit these approaches using methods to spread SMSs across multiple accounts, sending spoof UL requests and various other tactics.
Evolved Intelligence SMS Fraud Management is designed to be adaptable. Sophisticated on line analysis tools continually scan your SS7 traffic data looking for unusual patterns which may indicate fraudulent activity. If a known pattern is detected, then the SMS message can be rejected. If an unknown pattern is detected, then the system can alert you via email or SMS message. If fraudulent activity is confirmed, new algorithms can be developed quickly to recognise this new pattern and block the behaviour in future.
The system can also produce reports for forwarding to the appropriate roaming partner or enforcement agency for further action.
