The Multi Purpose Platform

ENGINE has been designed to allow multiple applications, of different types, to be run on a single platform.  This clearly reduces costs and creates a much simpler and more easily managed architecture.   It also allows the creation of compound applications.

By compound applications we mean one or more IN services that are implemented in an integrated way with an existing, typically legacy, IN infrastructure.  This means, for example, that an operator can decide to offer a sponsored pre-pay call service in conjunction with an existing, legacy, pre-pay system.  This can be done without commissioning a lengthy upgrade project from the IN pre-pay vendor.

Examples of ENGINE Services

Typical services that could be deployed on ENGINE include:

VPN Services
Group short-codes, blacklists, whitelists, call forwarding, time of day/day of week filtering to group/private accounts.

vPBX Services
Auto attendant, hunt groups, call transfer within group, PA filtering and voice mail – individual and group.

Messaging Services
Messaging VPN services – SMS forwarding, SMS/MMS blacklists, spam filtering and SMS/MMS whitelists.

Prepay Services
Prepay group accounts, discounted rates for group calls, dynamic cell based discounting, time of day/day of week re-direction to pre/post pay accounts, integration of LBS to prepay, free child to parent prepay calls and sponsored calls.

Roaming Services
Virtual Home Environment, preferred network or roaming steering, border roaming, short-code translation, whitelists, blacklists, VPN for roaming.

Next Gen Services
Inter-working between GSM/IMS (e.g. as an IM-SSF) to provide for example Voice Call Continuity services, SMS-Instant Messaging inter-working, presence-based routing.  Integration of the PC with the mobile experience.

HTTP to SS7 Gateway Services
These services enable enterprise based applications to harness the power of the SS7 network.   This provides services such as subscriber location enquiry, machine to subscriber communication via USSD and various checks designed to detect fraudulaent activity.

IN Migration and Inter-working
Deployed more in platform mode, ENGINE can be used to perform soft-migrations of IN systems, thereby avoiding the more big-bang approach associated with IN swap-outs.  For example, migration can be done on a time basis to minimise risk.  Previously this was only possible by running large periodic scripts around an HLR to modify details associated with the IMSI.

Open System Development
ENGINE is based on the JAIN SLEE open standard which allows the mobile operator to draw on three sources of services, should the service required not be in the list above.  These options are: built in-house, commission Evolved Intelligence, or commission any other certified third party development company.
